"Starfish" is the first novel of the "Rifters" trilogy, which began the path of Peter Watts to worldwide fame as one of the most powerful and brightest representatives of the world pantheon of masters of hard science fiction (hard sci-fi). Unlike most of the subsequent cycles, in "Rifters" the writer focuses on the issues of the near future of humanity on Earth, when, according to Watts the scientist, we will soon face inevitable environmental and energy problems, overlapping with the problems of large-scale migrations, even greater social and cultural stratification of society and an endless chain of economic crises. We are already able to observe all this with our own eyes, and, obviously, at least the first half of the 21st century will pass under the signs of these bad omens.
Deep under the water, a small group of modified submariners, antisocial exiles from the surface world, support the operation of a power station that feeds the energy of deep-sea volcanoes all along the west coast of the North American continent
