Description

Although Kaname himself does not fully realize it, his unhappiness is largely due to his desire for the tranquility of the old Japanese way of life and his inability to fully accept it. One day, the man meets a woman who is the living embodiment of old Japan. It seems that this may finally put an end to his unhappy marriage.

The novel "To Love and Taste" by Junichirō Tanizaki, one of the most famous Japanese authors of the 20th century, was a turning point for the writer. This work is semi-biographical and marks a departure from Western culture and a return to the sources. The original title can be interpreted as a catchphrase "To each his own." The lack of clarity in the structure can confuse the Western reader or sometimes make him perceive the main characters quite negatively. However, the essence of Tanizaki's style is in the hints, and as the author himself put it - if readers understand the characters, they will know how the story ends.

The book is captivating with its personal conflict between the characters and the clash between old and new cultures, so characteristic of modern Japan. These two confrontations are skillfully intertwined and merged at every level of this intimate portrayal of a Japanese family. The author often emphasizes the importance of beauty and sensuality, referring to traditional art, architecture and seasonal images of his native country. This book may appeal to those who are interested in Japanese culture and literature, are concerned with the theme of a troubled marriage, and love psychological and introspective novels.
