Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi's prose is full of bright colors and sharp dramatic conflicts, while his life is full of gray everyday life, boring work, and service to society. No matter where the events of his works take place—in Chernihiv, in the Carpathians, or on Capri, Italy—the writer's focus is always on the individual. He is interested in the island person who is experiencing a spiritual drama, distancing himself from others, striving for harmony, and at the same time searching for a kindred spirit. This is a separate, mysterious universe, the secrets of which the writer offers to touch and, perhaps, solve something.
Kotsiubynskyi wrote in a letter about the short story "On the Island" that it must contain "a little bit of sun, sea, people, and me." So this book also contains the sun, sea, people, and the author himself.
