During 2022–2024, journalist Svitlana Oslavska documented testimonies of war crimes committed by Russians in the occupied territories of Ukraine. The author spoke with survivors in Snihurivka, Shevchenkove, Yahydne, and other cities and villages that survived the occupation. These people literally experienced the terror of the Russian invasion on their own skin. They witnessed their loved ones being shot. How houses, streets, and entire cities were destroyed. They experienced torture and inhumane treatment, kidnapping, and rape. But the Russians failed to deprive these people of their dignity.
“On Their Own Skin” is a frank statement about the criminality of Russian aggression, and at the same time, testimony to the power of individual people.
