Hamsun always set himself the task of not only depicting the actions of his characters, but also of penetrating into all the recesses of their souls. In his last book, On Overgrown Paths, he made an attempt to penetrate the depths of his soul and describe perhaps the most dramatic pages of his own life, when at a rather respectable age he had to experience despair, disappointment and humiliation. The writer calls his work diary entries, but before us appears a whole mosaic of memories, touching with frankness, laconicism and irony, by which one can recognize Hamsun's unique style.
