One evening in 1967, twenty-six-year-old John Donoghue, known as Chick, was relaxing with friends in a New York bar. There, a local patriot proposed an idea that some called inspired, others called completely crazy: someone should sneak into Vietnam, find his comrades, give them news from home, and drink a can of beer together. But who would agree to such madness? Chick volunteered for the mission.
Soon he was on a cargo ship to Vietnam - with an Irish attitude and a backpack full of beer. Once in Quignon, Chick began an adventure that would change his life forever: an odyssey that combined funny escapades and terrifying ordeals. But none of that mattered, because his goal was to cheer up his friends and show them how much they meant to their loved ones. This is the story of that epic “beer run,” told in the words of Chick himself and the soldiers he visited in Vietnam.
