"Nil Desperandum" is the second book in the trilogy "The Year 1794" by Władysław Reymont, continuing the epic panorama of the Polish people's struggle for freedom and statehood. While in the first book the events take place mainly in Grodno, in the second the geography expands: Warsaw, Paris, the outskirts of Krakow, where Tadeusz Kościuszko waits for the right time for an armed uprising, Grabów is the ancestral estate of the main character Sever Zaremba, who, together with his like-minded people, continues to prepare for the fight against the Russian occupiers. The story features dozens of real historical figures, describes the lives of noble families, townspeople and peasants, and depicts colorful figures of folk life. All of them are drawn into the maelstrom of a great national movement.
The second book is distinguished by its dynamism: the plots intertwine, old conflicts escalate, and new threats intensify the atmosphere in which every step can become decisive. The novel presents with particular force the idea of moral fortitude, expressed by the Latin motto Nil desperandum! – Do not despair!
