Description

Simon Tolkien's novel, which he dedicated to his grandfather, John Tolkien, a participant in the Battle of the Somme, was first published in 2016. Here, against the backdrop of Edwardian society, the life of the main character, Adam Raine, unfolds. From the earliest years, it is marked by poverty, and brief happy moments are like those fleeting rays of sunshine that unexpectedly break through storm clouds.

He had to go through the poor areas of London, a mining town blackened by coal dust in the north of England, lose his closest people. And when life seemed to be starting to get better - finally the doors to university opened before him and the path to the heart of his beloved opened - the flames of the Great War burst into him, threatening to destroy everything he held dear.
