The proposed volume represents the system of views of Yuriy Shevelyov (1908-2002) — a famous linguist-Slavist, historian of Ukrainian literature, publicist, active participant in the scientific and cultural life of Ukrainian emigration — on the structure and norms of the Ukrainian literary language in the fields of spelling, phonetics, grammar and vocabulary. Particular attention is paid to stress and stylistic issues. The central place is occupied by the still unsurpassed "Essay on Modern Ukrainian Literary Language", and certain aspects of the topic are covered in "Main Rules of Ukrainian Spelling" and a number of other works (partly using typescripts from the researcher's archive). Y. Shevelov relies on thoroughly worked out norms of the 1920s and the linguistic practice of leading Ukrainian writers, the book is replete with the author's clarifications and individual observations of the living language and its developmental trends.
