“I wouldn’t want to go back to my childhood for a moment,” Hryhir Tiutiunnyk often said about his life. However, he returned there again and again, piecing together in his works a puzzle of (auto)biographies of small characters who had to endure difficult trials: war, Soviet totalitarianism, poverty, violence…
The stories, novellas, and short stories of Hryhir Tiutiunnyk are focused on revealing the inner world of a person — a child, a young man, a young woman — with all their experiences and tragic fatalistic overtones. This world is so fragile and vulnerable against the backdrop of the relentlessly cruel whirlwind of war and post-war life, and the pain that the young characters carry in their hearts remains with the reader for a long time.
