At a charity party in New York, a mysterious landscape "At the Edge of the Woods" by Sara de Vos, the first woman to be admitted to the Guild of St. Luke, is replaced with a copy. A private investigator leads the deceived owner to poor graduate student Ellie Shipley, who is barely keeping afloat. Half a century later, the decision to paint a fake still haunts her: she is curating an exhibition of works by Dutch artists and learns that both versions of the painting are headed to the museum.
