Valerian Pidmohylny (1901–1937) was one of the most prominent prose writers of the period of the Shot Revival, a translator, literary critic, and linguist. He contributed to the entry of Ukrainian literature into the European cultural space.
In V. Pidmohylny’s intellectual and psychological prose, the loneliness and alienation of the main characters are generated by the lack of freedom of man in an absurd world. Ostap Shaptala, the hero of the story of the same name, after the death of his sister feels guilty towards her and finds himself in a “borderline situation.” The writer warns against illusions and the search for objects of worship, which can be not only people, but also ideas, things, and images. The hero of “Untitled Stories” searches for a charming stranger in the city in order to rediscover the value of human existence. This work contains reflections on the purpose of art, and therefore partially reveals V. Pidmohylny’s aesthetic views.
