In the novel "The Island" the author reflects on the meaning of human existence, on the conflict between man and the circumstances of life, the forces of nature on which he depends and which he cannot influence.
The main characters are Ivan and Kateryna, an elderly couple living out their lives on an abandoned, remote island. Not only have they been forgotten by their own children, they are also alienated from the rest of the island's inhabitants.
