Tara Westover first went to school at the age of 17. Before that, not only did she not get an education, but she was completely isolated from civilization, in particular, she never received medical care and does not even know the exact date of her birth. The girl's father, a Mormon fanatic, prepared the family for the end of the world, forced the children to work at a junkyard of old cars, and considered doctors to be the henchmen of the devil, so he allowed any injuries, even the most severe, to be treated only by folk methods. However, despite such a childhood, Tara Westover was able to break out of the confines of her family, get a higher education, and later a doctorate — and write a book about it.
In 2018, the book Educated by Tara Westover was included in the ten best publications of the year according to The New York Times.
