1914. World War I changes lives on both sides of the front. Henry Gaunt and Sidney Ellwood are students at the elite Preschut College, who have not yet realized all the horrors of war. Reading the death lists in the local newspaper every week, they increasingly come across the names of their friends and gradually understand what awaits them.
For Gaunt, an Englishman of German descent, the war becomes a question of identity when his family asks him to join the fight against the Germans. The boy himself is consumed by feelings for his best friend Ellwood - a sophisticated poet and handsome man who is secretly in love with Henry. To Gaunt's horror, Ellwood and their college friends also go to the front. What do they want: to fight for their country or to be forgotten? Now they are an inch from death, and no one knows whose name will be read next on the death lists.
