"Performance of the common city. At the Intersection of Art, Politics, and Public Life, by Pascal Guillen, is the fifth collection of articles in the Small Run Books series.
The city, the community and the museum are the main themes with which the leading cultural sociologist of our time, Pascal Guillen, works in the three texts of this collection.
The author defines the main principles of existence in a common urban space and asks the question: is a common city possible today, and if so, what are the ways of its creation?
Other key issues of the book also include: the current state of cultural institutions in the world, the future role of museums, art academies, and the challenges to which institutions in the common city have to respond.
"The city is always in motion, and any typology that tries to capture it fails to take into account the complexities of real life," writes Guillen, emphasizing complicity and coexistence in the chaos of urban life.
Editor's comment: "At a time when we are constantly losing common space, its architecture and monumental art, our editorial office publishes "Performing a Common City" by Pascal Guillen, which should serve as confidence in the protection of opposing processes. We are convinced that public space should be returned to society - for the interaction of different communities, for free artistic expressions and gatherings. We also need to support the cultural institutions located in our cities, because they play a key role in the horizontal-flat present, while still remaining centers for vertical-depths. Therefore, "Performing a common city", which works with the themes of the city, community and culture, is considered by us primarily as a step on the path of transformation in our society."
