The novel "Peter Kamentsind" was published in 1903 and immediately made the young Hesse famous. The main character of the novel is a village boy who dreams of writing a great poem, a unique ode to life. However, Peter's sincere plans are shattered in the big city, encountering inhuman cold, sober-cruel pragmatism. And, not wanting to adapt to the laws of the city he dislikes and disappointed in his dreams, he returns to his native village.
