This volume contains biographies of twelve figures of Greece and Rome: rulers, generals, thinkers and freedom fighters. In particular, the Spartan king Agesilaus, the Athenian strategist Cimon, the Roman military leader Gaius Marius. And the longest chapter is devoted to Pompey the Great and his role in the civil war.
It is worth mentioning separately the biography of Cato the Elder - a politician who embodied the philosophy of Stoicism and whose name became a symbol of modesty and adherence to morality in politics.
