How did we end up in a post-truth world, where “alternative facts” replace real facts, and feelings are more important than obvious evidence and refutation? What is post-truth? Is it an attempt to pass off wishful thinking as reality, political manipulation, the darkening of mass consciousness? Or just lies?
This book examines numerous cases from the presidency of Donald Trump and his free handling of facts and use of “magical thinking”. Moreover, the author goes even further and demonstrates that post-truth did not begin with the 2016 American elections or the 2019 Ukrainian elections. He shows the origin of this phenomenon in the manipulative denial of scientific facts about smoking, evolution, vaccination and global warming. The author analyzes the psychological effects, the decline of traditional media and the rise of social networks, as well as the postmodernist claim adopted by right-wing radicals that there is no objective truth.
