Harry Dresden's life is in complete disarray. His main client (and close friend), Lieutenant Karrin Murphy, no longer trusts him. The police look askance at him. The Chicago underworld considers him a sorcerer in the service of the mobster Johnny Marcone. And the mysterious White Council continues to treat him with suspicion.

His office is empty. The phone is silent. In a city teeming with otherworldly creatures, the only official wizard increasingly has an empty schedule. No demons, no ghosts, not even banal love spells.
