Description

About DBT: A Step-by-Step Guide to Dialectical Behavior Therapy by Sheri van Dijk aims to explain everything about DBT in an accessible and detailed way, without omitting important nuances about its use.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy was originally developed to treat borderline personality disorder (BPD), but over time it became clear that it is effective for other disorders as well. Due to its success in helping people manage their emotions more effectively, DBT has become a fairly popular treatment method, but unfortunately, we are short of therapists with sufficient training in dialectical behavior therapy, considering how many people use this therapy model.

The main goal of this book is to give therapists a basic understanding of the theory behind DBT, the strategies used in individual sessions that distinguish it from traditional CBT, and the skills of DBT itself. This guide will make DBT more accessible to therapists who are not used to it, and will also introduce it to ordinary patients who could benefit from such treatment in a way that they can understand.

Sheri van Dijk is a Master of Social Work psychotherapist in private practice and at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. She is the author of The Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Skills Workbook for Bipolar Disorder, Don't Let Your Emotions Control Your Life for Teens, and How to Tame the Emotional Storm, and co-author of The Workbook for Teens with Bipolar Disorder. In September 2010, she received the R. O. Jones Award from the Canadian Psychiatric Association for her research on the use of DBT skills in the treatment of bipolar disorder.
