"The Cursed Yard" is one of the best and most famous novels by the Nobel laureate in literature, Ivo Andrych. This novel is built according to the "story within a story" principle, allowing the writer to combine several stories simultaneously. One of them takes place at the beginning of the last century in an Istanbul prison, where fate threw a Franciscan monk from Bosnia. Another story dates back to the 15th century and tells the actual fate of Jam Sultan, who is fighting for power with his brother Bayazid II. Despite the tense plot, this is also a philosophical novel, in which the parable of rival brothers turns into a reflection on the clash of romantic and pragmatic principles, and the "damned yard" becomes not only the prison yard but also human life itself.
