After the events of The Fourth Trial, Elias and Laia are on the run. She is determined to break into Kafka's prison and rescue her brother. Elias is determined to help Laia succeed, even if it means giving up his last chance at freedom.
But dark forces, both human and otherworldly, are working against Laia and Elias. The heroes must fight at every turn to outwit their enemies: the bloodthirsty Emperor Mark, the ruthless Commandant, the sadistic warden Kafka, and, most terrifying of all, Elias's former girlfriend, Helena, the new Blood Guardian of the Empire.
