J. Saramago's novel "The Insight" (2004) is both a political satire and a philosophical parable, in which the writer essentially builds a modern model of the world, exposing a rotten democratic society. The events in "The Insight" take place four years after those described in the novel "Blindness". A new epidemic has struck the city. The color of this disaster, as before, is white: white, that is, blank, ballots in the elections are an indisputable sign of rebellion for the authorities. The government demonstratively leaves the capital, taking the police and municipal services with it.
However, the same people who, having gone blind four years ago, became like animals, this time maintain their city in perfect order: shops and other institutions are still open, there is no garbage on the streets, and crime is not increasing. But this only further convinces the government that there is a rebellion. To find the rebels, three agents were sent to the city - the commissioner and his two assistants. They have a clue - a woman who, when the epidemic of blindness broke out, was the only one who did not go blind.
Having got to know her better, the commissioner realized that she was not guilty of anything, but his conclusion did not suit the authorities, who know what to do with inconvenient people. A few shots - and the problem was solved...
