The work of the classic of English literature by Charles Dickens (1812–1870) tells about the misfortunes and wanderings of the little orphan Oliver Twist, who grew up in an asylum for the poor (the so-called workhouse). Having escaped from there, Oliver ends up in the London slums, where he, like other homeless people, is taught the thief's trade. The happy ending - Oliver is saved by the "perfect gentleman", Mr. Brownlow - confirms the writer's optimistic confidence in the victory of humanity and good over evil and injustice.
