Description

Shevchenko the poet is a figure of such magnitude and importance that it has replaced Shevchenko the man. What do we know about his character, temperament, human qualities, attitude towards children, about his gastronomic preferences? What types of women did he like? What kind of clothes did he prefer? How did he treat money? How did his appearance and health change at different stages of his life? What kind of life did he live? The collection of Shevchenko studies “Private Shevchenko” answers these questions. It complements the textbook image of a prophet and national genius with human traits and, importantly, does it in a scientific way. You will be surprised how much Shevchenko did not fit into the school curriculum.

“Private Shevchenko” is not about the Kobzar. This is a book about a man of medium height, with a strong build, blond hair and a round face. In his youth, he wore luxurious sideburns, and later one child called him “bald uncle.” He loved Lafitte, Chihir and tea with rum. In short, a mini-encyclopedia about Taras Shevchenko's everyday life: what he ate, drank, what he was sick with, whom he loved and where he spent the night.

"Private Shevchenko" was prepared jointly with the T. H. Shevchenko Institute of Literature of the NAS of Ukraine. The book was edited by Oleksandr Boron, head of the Shevchenko Studies Department of the Institute.

This is a collection of articles about the private life and everyday life of a prominent person. You will not find any gossip or rumors in it, only scientifically verified facts. The authors of the collection talk about what Shevchenko's everyday life consisted of: the conditions in the apartments where he had to live, the hotels and taverns where he stayed during his numerous travels, where he got money for his living, where he stopped for a glass of gin and oysters, about his wardrobe, everyday life, food, women, children and much more.
