Teaming up with the venerable detective Ganimard and the no less famous Herlock Sholmes, the young man sets out to bring the famous robber to justice.

To do this, he needs to solve an intricate cryptogram puzzle that has fallen into the hands of the police and leads to a mysterious cape-rock called "The Hollow Needle".

During the investigation, the young intellectual Botrelet learns that this place has been used by French kings for many centuries as a repository for their treasures.
