This is a collection of insightful and poignant essays about the lives and work of Ukrainian writers. Some of them became famous and respected during their lifetime, some gained recognition only after their death, and we know little about some even now. Some demonstrated courage and fortitude, resisting first imperial and later Soviet attempts to destroy or marginalize Ukrainian literature, while others had to give in and serve the authorities until their death, wasting their talent and torn between the desire to survive and the desire to remain themselves. Some managed to escape abroad, but this also did not become salvation, but only a kind of mental torture. Everyone made their own choice, but the works of these writers are part of the Ukrainian literary heritage and deserve to be read and analyzed, to be filled with and inspired by them. To understand them more thoroughly, it is worth not only knowing the historical and cultural context, but also taking into account the opinions of specialists. And who can better understand a writer and more deeply comprehend his works than another writer?
