Renaissance painting originated in Italy. With the return to antiquity, a worldview was revived that saw humans as capable of determining their own existence. In painting, new subjects emerged, along with a new, reality-based style of representation. From around this time on, this naturalism was significantly influenced by Dutch painting. With the transition from the 15th to the 16th century,\nRome succeeded Florence as the center of the Renaissance. Shortly thereafter, the new style spread to other European countries. In Northern Europe, the Renaissance merged with late medieval movements that also placed greater emphasis on earthly\nexistence.
