The novel "Garden of Gethsemane" is one of the first works of world literature that reveals the criminal essence of Stalinism. The novel describes in detail the stages of terror experienced by the main character Andrii Chumak and hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians in the 1930s. Only the extremely strong in spirit were able to survive, preserving human dignity and resisting this system of violence and lawlessness.
Ivan Bahrianyi suffered brutal repression during the Stalinist period. In 1945, he emigrated from the USSR and settled in Germany. It was there that Bahrianyi wrote his most famous works, including "Garden of Gethsemane", "The Hunters and the Hunted", "The Fiery Circle", "Marusia Bohuslavka" and others.
His experiences and painful fate were reflected in his work, which gained recognition all over the world.
