Selma Lagerlef is one of the greatest Swedish writers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In her works, she managed to reflect the most characteristic features of the Swedish national character. Therefore, although her bright, original work still gravitates towards the traditional, classical manner of artistic depiction and has its roots in folklore, she had and still has a great influence on outstanding representatives of modern Swedish literature, even on those belonging to various new trends. Critics unanimously agree that the appearance of Selma Lagerlöf's "Jesta Berling's Saga" marks the beginning of the era of the great novel in Swedish literature.
