In the novel "The Self-Knowledge of Zeno" (1923), the main character, a businessman from Trieste, writes memoirs for his psychoanalyst. Zeno Cosini not only remembers what happened to him in the past, but also confesses, examines himself. The story is told in the first person, but not in chronological order, but focusing on individual moments from life. This is also the story of the death of his father, of his attempts to quit smoking, the story of his marriage and other events. The novel is an analysis of the psychology of Zeno, a man who feels "sick", "worthless" and constantly wants to cure his illness, but attempts to do so often lead to the opposite result.
