Salman Rushdie's novel The Satanic Verses was published more than 35 years ago and has been one of the most haunted books in the world ever since. Its author, a British writer of Indian origin, survived several assassination attempts after the Iranian leader issued a fatwa calling for Rushdie's execution. The Muslim world was outraged by the way the writer interpreted the story of the Prophet Muhammad.
The story about the founder of Islam is only one of the many plot lines of the work.
"The Satanic Verses" is a brilliant example of a novel written in the genre of magical realism. The book intricately intertwines real events and incredible metamorphoses of the main characters, one of whom turns into a devil, and the other into an angel. Both of them are in a painful search for the meaning of existence, and each one goes through his own difficult path of realizing his roots.
