"Sentences" is one of the oldest known collections of "winged sayings", compiled in the 1st century AD. The sayings (sentences) are selected from mimes - comic performances of a rather down-to-earth nature, the author of which was Publilius Cyr - a former slave, and later a successful author and actor. "Sentences" are poetic aphorisms, often built on the play of words and unexpected turns of thought, which contain apt observations on the nature of man and society, moral and political maxims.
