The novel Heart of Darkness (1899) by the Polish-born British writer Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) is rightly considered a masterpiece of modernist literature. Taking advantage of a long stay in port, the novel's protagonist, sailor and wanderer Charles Marlowe, tells of his journey in search of the infamous ivory merchant Kurtz. Traveling upriver into the heart of the African continent, he gradually becomes increasingly obsessed with this mysterious figure, eventually finding him - near death, half-mad and guilty of unspeakable crimes. A brief acquaintance with Kurtz and the horrors witnessed in the upper Congo prompt Marlowe to radically rethink not only his own views and values, but also those of so-called Western civilization in general. Heart of Darkness is a classic modernist novel that explores the limits of human experience and the nightmarish realities of imperialism. The novel served as the literary basis for Francis Ford Coppola's acclaimed film Apocalypse Now.
