The principle of the grid system presented in this book was developed and introduced in Switzerland after World War II. The first examples of printed matter designed using a grid appeared in the second half of the 1940s. This new trend was characterized by the arrangement of text and illustrations according to clear principles, uniformity in the design of all pages, and objectivity in the presentation of the material. Josef Müller-Brockmann’s classic work (first published in 1981) highlights the main issues of constructing and using a grid and the principles of developing grid systems using real typographic examples.
