Hryhoriy Skovoroda (1722–1794) occupies a special place in the history of Ukraine, as he witnessed the gradual loss of autonomy by the Hetmanate and its transformation into a province in the conditions of the expansion of the Russian Empire. Such processes left little chance for human development not only in the political but also in the cultural sphere. Under such conditions, Skovoroda's intellectual mission was to create a philosophical project of personality formation, designed for those who are ready for an autocratic existence. Skovoroda's idea of self-mastery grows out of the doctrine of self-knowledge and related work. After all, every person is able to recognize the talents received from God, find himself in the world, achieve self-realization and achieve happiness.
