Borys Antonenko-Davydovych is a writer, translator, and linguist. Sentenced first to execution, and then to life exile. The main character of his story "Death" is a former figure of the Central Rada and the Directory, Kost Horobenko, who still speaks Ukrainian in principle. Breaking himself, he tries to turn into a real communist, to become his own. To do this, he requisitions a piano and books, writes denunciations. But Kost still sees his beloved in his dreams, and keeps the requisitioned books in a separate room as a reminder of his former life. He is disgusted with himself for the actions that he is forced to commit. And even despite this internal conflict, he continues to portray a communist. And in order to finally become one, he must dare to do the worst thing - murder.
