“From the Land of Rice and Opium” is the second travelogue by Sofia Yablonska, written during 1932-1935, when she worked as a cameraman in China and Indochina. In it, the author describes in detail all the complexities of the process of shooting film reports and photographs in an environment where people still believe that the camera takes the soul. Yablonska’s novel is dynamic, filled with vivid characters, unusual adventures, even adventures. It was first published in 1936 in Lviv.
The 2018 edition is part of the art project “TEURA. Sofia Yablonska”, the goal of which is to return Sofia Yablonska to the cultural discourse and establish her as a relevant figure in Ukrainian art. In addition to "From the Land of Ginger and Opium," the project is publishing two other travel novels by Sofia - "The Charm of Morocco" and "Distant Horizons," as well as a book of her photos taken in the 1930s.
