Alan Conway is a famous author of classic British detective stories. His editor, Susan Ryland, has been working with him for many years and is forced to put up with the writer's bad temper only because his hero - the famous detective Atticus Pound - brings the publishing house a lot of profit.
When Susan receives Alan's latest manuscript, in which Pound investigates another murder in an English town, she is almost certain that this novel will be similar to the previous ones. It will again have corpses, a number of mysterious suspects, many false clues and clues. However, with each page she reads, Susan understands that there is more than one intricate riddle encrypted here. And when she learns that the author died unexpectedly, having just handed over the manuscript, she begins her own investigation.
What secrets does Conway's latest book hide, and could they have been the cause of his death?
