After long journeys, Zhi finally returns to the monastery of the Singing Hills. But a surprise awaits them near their native walls - giant royal mammoths and a camp of northerners. It turns out that Zhi's mentor, monk Thien, died of an illness, and his grandchildren want to take the body and bury it with all the honors of the clan to which he belonged. If the monks do not allow this, the mammoths will easily demolish the gate and destroy the valuable archive of the Singing Hills. So Zhi will have to postpone work on his travel notes in order to preserve both his home and his old friendship, and the story of the broken heart of the Neixin bird, whose grief no man can understand.
