The memoirs of Yosyp Hirniak (1895–1989), one of the greatest actors of Berezil Theatre, are a unique monument of Ukrainian history of the first half of the 20th century. Together with the author, the reader finds himself behind the scenes of one of the best Ukrainian theaters. Exclusive information about the preparation, rehearsals, and premieres of the iconic Kurbas performances gives the memories particular importance. This is an alternative history of Berezil Theatre, told in the first person.
Particular attention was paid to Les Kurbas and Ostap Vyshnia in the memoirs; with the latter, Yosyp Hirnyak was in exile. The memoir opens with a foreword by Tetiana Boiko; an index of names, plays, operas, and films was developed for publication.
"Memories" was first published in 1982 in New York. It is published for the first time in Ukraine.
