Oles Ulianenko was called controversial, his works were criticized and officially banned, they were admired and read, and after reading they remained for a long time under the impression of strong, imaginative, dense and bold writing. He is one of the most courageous Ukrainian writers, if we talk about the depiction of human nature. Oles Ulianenko shows the world and people as they are, without embellishment and masks: cruelty and violence, debauchery, hopelessness, doom, animal instincts, the edge of madness and the futile search for meaning, the moral breakdown of a person at the bottom of society and life at a crossroads.
For the novel "Stalinka" the author received the Small Shevchenko Prize in 1997.
