"The Elder Edda" (also "Semund's Edda") is a monument of ancient Icelandic literature, a model of a classic epic, a landmark work of medieval European literature. Ancient songs recorded some eight hundred years ago in Iceland contain our basic knowledge of Norse mythology. Majestic pictures of the creation and destruction of the world, the adventures of Thor, Loki, Odin, the pranks of trolls, the battle of Sigurd with the dragon Fafnir, the bloody drama at the court of the Hun lord Atli - images of heroes and plots that inspired and still inspire writers, composers, artists, directors, etc. even developers of computer games. For a better understanding of the work, the text is accompanied by notes and comments and illustrations by William Collingwood from the 1908 English edition of the Elder Edda.
Translated into Ukrainian for the first time, this edition will be useful to philologists, historians, cultural experts and anyone interested in medieval literature.
