Sumi-e is a meditative form of Japanese painting that uses vigorous strokes and washes of black ink. Sumi-e uses only ink, water, a stone pot, brush, and paper to convey the essence of natural objects and landscapes in a spontaneous yet harmonious way that promotes calm and concentration. Japanese artist Shozo Koike begins his book Sumi-e for Beginners: Learn Japanese-Style Ink Painting from a Contemporary Artist by talking about the origins of sumi-e and some of the great masters. He explains the basics of the technique, including what to buy and how to dilute the ink in a traditional stone pot. He then shows you how to practice 11 basic strokes. Finally, the author provides step-by-step instructions with detailed photos for 19 traditional painting subjects.
