The Prodigal Son. The first novel in the trilogy “Sparks in the Abyss”.
Soma Morgenstern’s trilogy “Sparks in the Abyss” is devoted to the theme of religious renegade, a rare one in German-Jewish literature. The example of the Podolian landowner family of the Mogilevskys from Dobropillya shows what an irreparable trauma the tragedy of the apostasy of one of its members, Joseph Mogilevsky, turns into for a devout Jewish family, and how difficult the process of conversion to the faith of his ancestors and his Jewish roots is for his descendant, raised in the bosom of Christianity. The first novel in the trilogy “Son of the Prodigal Son”, the translation of which is offered to the Ukrainian reader, was published in Germany in 1935 and received enthusiastic reviews from such contemporaries as Stefan Zweig, Hermann Hesse, Robert Musil, Joseph Roth, Walter Benjamin, and others.
