Young Californian Richard Papen enters a private college in New England. Ashamed of his origin, he watches with delight the five chosen ones - students studying in a course of ancient Greek with a charismatic professor Julian. Twins Charles and Camilla, intelligent Henry, elegant Francis and cheerful Bunny - all of them seem to be shrouded in an aura of unattainability.
