In September 1939, when Nazi Germany is bombing London, sisters Geisel and Flora Linden are evacuated to Oxfordshire, away from the city. The girls find shelter in the family of Bridey and her son Harry in the village of Binsey. To distract her sister from the horrors of war, Geisel invents a magical land for them, Whisper Grove, where they will always be safe.
One day, little Flora disappears, all searches are in vain. The police eventually conclude that she drowned in the Thames. The disappearance of a little girl during the war is not something extraordinary, so over time everyone came to terms with this version.
Years pass, but Geisel, who now lives in London and works in a bookstore of rare books, cannot believe in the death of Flora. On her last day at work, an amazing book and illustrations arrive at the bookstore. And this will force Geisel to return to the search for her missing sister. But for this she must come face to face with her past, which she so diligently avoided.
