The Diary is a highly artistic and extremely interesting autobiographical notes created by Shevchenko during 1857–1858.

The preface and notes were compiled by Prof. Leonid Ushkalov; was developed a name index and added 52 illustrations accompanying the text of the diary; most of the illustrations are by T. Shevchenko.
