Ivan Franko (1856–1916) first visited Hutsul Oblast as a 24-year-old boy and since then has been coming here throughout his life.
He was most fascinated by Kryvorivnia, where the writer was friends with the local priest Oleksa Volyanskyi. In Burkut, he met Lesya Ukrainka when she came for treatment with healing water. And he also visited Dovgopill, Golovy, Kosiv, Berehomet, Kuty... Although he hardly limited himself to these Hutsul locations.
In addition to the pleasant activities of fishing for trout or collecting mushrooms and athens, Franko liked to communicate with the Hutsuls very much. He picked up precious stories from those conversations and dressed them in a diamond of literature. This is how the writer created the stories "King of Hutsul", "Teren in the leg" and "How Yura Shikmanyuk eyebrows Cheremosh", which are presented in the book.
Hutsulshchyna beckoned Ivan Franko since his student years. In one of the first stories, "Petria and Dovbuschuka", he interprets the story of Oleksa Dovbush. Already at a mature age, Franko edited it, correcting "the flaws of the novel written in the young years." You will also find the story in this edition.
